2025 PCGCA Grants
Chipping Hill Micro Farms
This grant is for the education of Pre-K students at the Johnson Childcare Center in Ogontz for weekly classes and summer camps. Funds will be used to purchase horticultural supplies such as soil, compost and seeds, watering supplies and tools. The aim of the grant is to teach children where their food comes from and to encourage them to eat more healthy food.
Face to Face
This grant is for beautification of public facing Price Street in Germantown. Materials purchased with the grant will be for creating 4 wooden planters, soil, perennials, herbs and annuals to make the place more welcoming.
Fair Amount Food Forest
This grant is for continued food production on a 2-acre urban farm serving the community in East Fairmount Park, near Woodford Mansion. Materials purchased with the grant will be for adding culinary plants, nut and fruit trees. In addition, they are asking for funds to print 500 educational plant signs.
Friends of Adaire
This grant is in support of a K-8 pubic school in Fishtown (Adaire) and goes toward education and food production. Materials purchased with this grant will be soil, compost, trellises, irrigation systems, and gardening supplies for children. The group has support from Penn State Master Gardener Program and the Vetri Foundation.
Friends of FDR Park
This grant supports food production and education for Food Forest within FDR Park in South Philly. Funds will be used to purchase berry plants, native grapes, herbs, shrubs, perennials and seed packets.
Friends of Laurel Hill
This grant is for creating a Goth Garden in the centrally located Medallion Garden of Laurel Hill East Cemetery in East Falls. Grant money will support the purchase, planting and mulching of shrubs in the Goth style and materials for plant signage.
Friends of Pastorius Park
This grant supports the restoration of a section of Pastorius Park, the Paul W Meyer Woods in Chestnut. Funds will be used to purchase 69 understory trees of 8 native varieties to replace invasive species.
Germantown Residents for Economic Alternatives Together (GREAT)
This grant is for food production and community enrichment in two community gardens in Germantown: People’s Lot and Awbury Cooperative Farm. In addition, a one-day garden expo event at Wyck will educate residents. Materials purchased with the grant will be soil, compost, seedlings, and plants. The goal of the grant is to provide plants and soil so that the community can grow healthy food to share and to build their gardening and cooking skills.
Gesu School
This grant supports installing new raised beds on the South-facing side of the rooftop rec area of Gesu School in North Philly. Funds will be used to build or purchase raised beds, soil, compost, seeds and educational materials for the students. Gesu Scholl is a K-8 school located next door to St. Joseph’s Prep, who they partner with.
Greener Partners
This grant will finance the addition of drip irrigation to their existing Farm Explorers bin gardens. Containers are plastic milk crates which are taken by van and used to teach children at various locations around the Belmont neighborhood of West Philadelphia.
Grumplethorpe Historic House & Gardens
This grant is for the rebuilding of a historic cedar Wisteria arbor and adding one large raised bed adjacent to the arbor, planted with historic primroses and spring bulbs, benefiting the Germantown community. The goal of the project is to enhance the historic landscape of the 1741 house, which serves as an oasis for the community and provides horticulture education for youth.
Magee Rehabilitation Hospital
This grant continues the patient horticultural therapy program at their outpatient facility at Riverfront in Philadelphia, which is a new facility within Magee group. Materials purchased with the grant will be indoor seed starting materials, seeds, plants, and hydroponic grow systems.
Methodist Services Heritage Farm
This grant is for food production at Heritage Farm, serving approximately 2600 neighbors from infant to adult in West Philadelphia. Materials will also be used to educate children K-6 in after-school and summer camp programs. Materials to be purchased will be seeds and seed starting materials, potting soil, soil amendments and fertilizer. The goal of the grant is to assist in the education of growing and preparing healthy food and supplying food for family meals.
Neighborhood Garden Trust (NGT)
This grant will go towards a comprehensive renovation of the Nicholson Church Lane Community Garden in East Germantown.
Physic Garden of The Pennsylvania Hospital
The grant is for plants to maintain the historic 18th Century medicinal herb garden and for rejuvenation of the surrounding woodland garden with native shrubs and perennials located in downtown Philadelphia. The garden serves as an oasis for the hospital staff, patients, and visitors.
St. Christopher’s Hospital
This grant will fund a new garden at St. Christopher’s in North Philadelphia as part of the Center for the Urban Child to grow fresh produce, herbs and flowers for patients and their families. Funds will be used to build or purchase raised beds, soil, plants, compost bin and irrigation system. The garden will also serve as respite for staff with a seating area.
Sanctuary Farm
This grant will be used to create 2 new plots: one with flower beds to support their bee hives and another at neighboring New Jerusalem Now (a residential addiction recovery center) to create 5-6 beds for vegetables in the Sharswood /Brewery town community of North Philadelphia. Funds will be used to build large beds, soil, tools, seedlings and seeds.
Stenton
This grant will fund 2 planting areas, one between Dinah’s Memorial and the House, and another along the North 18th Street woodland walk. Funds will be used to purchase native plants suitable for the 2 locations.
Wagner Free Institute of Sciences
This grant will be used to enhance the teaching garden by increasing the number and types of native plants, adding soil and soil amendments, an irrigation system and educational materials. A professional landscape designer provided detailed plans and listed plants. Wagner, located in North Philadelphia, works with 5 local elementary schools serving over 10,000 students annually.
Woodlands
This grant for the Woodland’s cradle graves in West Philadelphia will be used to purchase historically appropriate plants for the gardens and to improve the gardener’s tool shed and composting facility. 150 volunteer gardeners care for 250 cradle grave gardens.
Woodmere Art Museum
This grant will be used to build artist-designed Hugel gardens to be used as outdoor classrooms for children and adults. Funds will be used to purchase soil amendments and a variety of native plants.
